IBIS ProjectsThe International Biological Information System is currently engaged in four primary research endeavors. Our research projects are synergistic and all contribute towards providing information technology tools to help with the collection, management, mapping, and modeling of biological field data.
NIISSThe National Institute of Invasive Species Science (NIISS) is a consortium of government and non-government organizations formed to develop cooperative approaches for invasive species science that meet the urgent needs of land managers and the public. Administratively housed at the U.S. Geological Survey Fort Collins Science Center in Colorado, the National Institute of Invasive Species Science provides a hub for invasive species science collaboration, coordination, and integration across agencies and disciplines. CitSci.orgCitSci.org is an IBIS website designed to meet the spatial information management needs of citizen science organizations. CitSci.org is a website that allows citizen science organizations and their volunteers to streamline data collection, management, mapping, and analysis. Citizen science program directors can create online projects for their volunteers. They can create online data entry forms which can then be used by their volunteers to enter data, print for use in the field, or download to PDA units for easier data entry. Contributed data can then be viewed on an interactive map application, queried, downloaded, printed, and analyzed. We are starting to work on built-in spatial modeling features! GISINThe Global Invasive Species Information Network (GISIN) was formed to provide a platform for sharing invasive species information at a global level via the Internet and other digital means. GISIN is an IBIS website built to facilitate data exchange for invasive species data providers. The GISIN has been created to make information on invasive species around the world more available to everyone involved to aid in better early detection and rapid response. The GISIN web site serves as a registry for web services that provide information on invasive species. Members of the GISIN can display data being exchanged using online client-side mapping capabilities. MSPBecause the core values of IBIS center around creating information management tools for conservation, and because solid environmental literacy among members of the next generation is critical for future conservation efforts, IBIS staff have partnered with scientists and educators to assist them in assessing environmental science literacy throughout the US. We have built a website to allow students to take literacy assessments online and then allow teachers and evaluators the ability to code responses to improve teaching approaches and learning progressions. |
