Further Information - GPS

Although it is a very valuable tool in scientific data collection and analysis, it can be difficult to get an initial understanding of the way that GPS works. However, the Trimble Company, which manufactures professional hand-held GPS units, provides a long, but excellent tutorial about GPS and its uses and applications in not only natural resources, but also in land-use planning, and city management actions.

Additionally, the Garmin Company that makes recreational hand-held GPS units, also offers an explanation of GPS to its users, with an optional beginners guide and users manual available for download.

For more in-depth information about specific applications of GPS, the United States Government has created a webpage with more information about the positioning system that they created.
