Further Information - Phenology

It is increasingly important to monitor phenology, especially in the face of climate change. In March, 2009, an article was released, suggesting the need for citizen scientists to help monitor phenology and track the seasonal changes in cyclical events in the plant and animal worlds due to climate change. This is where you come in - teaching students the importance of phenological observation can help them realize the changes taking place, and can help them better prepare for the environmental future.

Additional resources for teaching phenology include The Phenology Handbook from the University of California at Santa Barbara, the National Phenology Network's Information Sheet, and Project BudBurst's Terminology Page.

To find species of plants to monitor, you may access Project BudBurst's Species Sheets, or go to the Project BudBurst website and take a look at the species that can be monitored.
